Monthly Workshops and Script Readings

The Latinxorcists conducts monthly Zoom workshops where members can share 2 to 4 scripts for feedback. This inclusive format allows Latino-identifying creators to have their work read and critiqued by peers and more experienced writers. The requirements are simple: participants must identify as Latino and submit scripts in the horror or sci-fi genres.

Key Features of Monthly Workshops:

  • Scripts read and workshopped for free.
  • An emphasis on genre storytelling, particularly horror.
  • Opportunities for networking and collaboration with industry professionals.

Chavez shared, “Getting your script read by other writers makes you a better writer,” emphasizing that constructive feedback from peers can catalyze growth and creativity.

Building a Community of Creators

The Latinxorcists is not just about reading scripts; it’s about nurturing a community of creators. With an intimate setting in their workshops, participants form lasting connections, exchanging ideas and support. Martinez highlighted the importance of being surrounded by fellow writers during this formative stage of their careers.

“Getting feedback from other writers that you don’t know makes you a better writer,” Martinez noted, illustrating the power of fresh perspectives.

The group is also in the process of selecting and developing a unique anthology of script narratives titled “The Grid,” showcasing the best of their collective work to continue fostering Latino representation in the horror genre.

Expanding Horizons - Shared Nightmares Podcast

In addition to their workshops, the Latinxorcists runs a podcast, "Shared Nightmares," which dives into fears and how they translate to storytelling in Hollywood. The podcast fosters discussions about real experiences within the genre while highlighting the creativity and talent of its members.

The group encourages submissions from creators who intersect with or support Latino stories, welcoming diverse horror narratives. “We want to carry this group with its intention,” stated Martinez. This open invitation seeks to harness the incredible potential within underrepresented storytellers.

As they continue their mission at events like NAB, the Latinxorcists stands as a beacon for emerging Latino filmmakers, advocating for the stories that often go unheard in mainstream Hollywood. By fostering a collaborative and inclusive community, they are not only enriching the horror genre, but they are also paving the way for future generations of filmmakers.
