Q&A Interview

What drew you to make Descent?
I was approached about directing Descent by Haven't You Done Well Productions in 2023. Meeting Ella, Millie, and Madi, we instantly clicked over our shared comedic style—taking silly material and treating it as seriously as possible.
"I want audiences to be entertained and feel like they’re watching a prestige and bingeable TV series rather than a web series."
I loved how the script balanced absurdity with moments of horror and serious storytelling. As my first long-form series, I wanted to create something that made people laugh and kept them invested in the story.
"Sometimes I like to start at a 10/10 intensity and try to keep building the comedy from there."
What was a surprising moment during production?
Seeing the set for the first time made me realize the importance of making the space feel dynamic, given most action happens in one room. Adding a hallway to the ship's main interior helped create a larger imagined environment. Our cinematographer, Wilson Huang, and I worked to make the lighting evolve with the story's tone, making the set feel more cinematic as the series progressed.

How has Descent influenced your future projects?
Descent has deepened my interest in playing with genre tropes, learning when to parody them versus embracing them wholeheartedly. The thriller elements were new to me, and I took inspiration from directors like De Palma and Tony Scott. I want to continue refining the balance between comedy and compelling genre storytelling.

What does HollyShorts mean to you?
"Being selected for HollyShorts is validating and recognizes the risks we took."
This project was born from instinct, experimentation, and a love for pushing comedy's boundaries. HollyShorts champions bold voices, and having our work embraced by such a festival is fantastic.
"Festivals like this create rare opportunities to connect with audiences and other filmmakers who are equally passionate and weird and ambitious."
