Our Commitment to Human Creativity in the Age of AI
At League of Filmmakers, we believe creativity is a human endeavor. The connection between artist and audience cannot be replicated by machines.
As technology evolves, we ensure every tool we use supports, not replaces, the filmmakers, educators, and artists at the heart of our community. Artificial intelligence (AI) plays only a limited, background role: refining grammar and formatting, improving accessibility, and streamlining workflows. It will never replace human thought, vision, or voice.
Our guiding principle is simple: AI is a tool, not a creator. We are committed to authenticity, accuracy, and transparency in how we use AI and, equally, how we do not.
How We Use AI
To maintain efficiency and accessibility in our work, we use AI in limited, clearly defined ways:
- Content Refinement: Editing transcripts from real-world recorded discussions for formatting, clarity, grammar, and flow while preserving the integrity of the original voices.
- Administrative Support: Organizing schedules, summarizing internal meeting notes, and helping structure internal emails (never automated community replies).
- Accessibility Enhancements: Generating captions and translations (via trusted services like Rev) to make our content more inclusive.
- Graphics (Occasional): Creating simple, on-brand visual materials only when suitable human-created images are unavailable based on article content or permissions. These are always prompted and curated in-house, adhering strictly to our brand guidelines.
How We Explicitly Do Not Use AI
We draw clear ethical boundaries to protect human creativity:
No Original Creative Content: AI is never used to generate scripts, treatments, pitch decks, or any other creative material.
No Creative Decision-Making: All submissions and program decisions are evaluated exclusively by human team members.
No Automated Community Engagement: Every email, social post, and reply you receive from us is written by a real person.
No Personal Data Analysis: We do not use AI to analyze or profile our community members.
No Research or Evaluative Tasks: AI is never used for fact-checking, research, or assessing creative submissions. These processes remain entirely human-led.
We also pay for higher-tier AI services to ensure data privacy and prevent our information from being used for external machine learning or training purposes.
Our Ethical Commitments
We are guided by these principles:
Human Originality is First: AI will never replace the creative voices of our community or team.
Transparency Matters:We openly share how and why we use AI.
Continuous Learning: We commit to staying informed about the evolving ethical landscape around AI and adjusting our practices as needed.
Staff Training & Oversight: Only designated team members are authorized to use AI-assisted tools, and they receive guidance on ethical practices and limitations. All AI-assisted work undergoes human review to ensure accuracy and alignment with our values.
Recognizing the Limitations of AI
AI tools can be useful for certain tasks but are also prone to errors, omissions, and biases. For this reason, all AI-assisted work at League of Filmmakers is carefully reviewed by humans to ensure accuracy, fairness, and alignment with our creative values.
Accountability & Community Dialogue
We understand that the conversation around AI is complex and ongoing. To remain accountable:
- We will review this policy quarterly at internal board meetings to reflect new insights and community concerns.
- Any significant changes to how we use AI will be communicated clearly and proactively.
Data Privacy & Analytics
We use analytics tools (Microsoft Clarity, Umami Analytics, Google Analytics) to improve our services. Each of these services has its own privacy policies, which you can review separately. No personal data is processed or analyzed through AI tools.
