About the Screenplay

Logline

A bootlegger opens a juke joint in the deep South but must spend opening night fending off uninvited guests.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners continues his signature blend of character-driven storytelling and genre filmmaking. The film was nominated for 16 Academy Awards—the most in Oscar history—and won multiple major honors including Best Original Screenplay.

With over $370 million in box office revenue and additional wins from BAFTA, WGA, and Fangoria, the screenplay offers a rich case study in tone, tension, and thematic layering.

Participants are encouraged to read the script before watching the film to fully engage with the writing on its own terms.

About the Moderator

The session will be led by Wendell Wellman—screenwriter, actor, playwright, and author of A Writer’s Roadmap.

Wellman has taught screenwriting at UCLA and UWV and has extensive experience across film, television, and theater. His credits include adapting Firefox for Clint Eastwood and contributing to Sudden Impact. He brings decades of craft knowledge to guide participants through the screenplay’s structure and storytelling choices.
