Overview

HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc., commonly known as HDMI LA, plays a central role in managing and supporting the worldwide ecosystem of HDMI® Technology. As the organization appointed to license the HDMI Specifications by both the HDMI Founders and the HDMI Forum, HDMI LA helps ensure that manufacturers, retailers, installers, and consumers can rely on HDMI-enabled products for high-quality audio and video connectivity across a broad range of consumer electronics, commercial AV, automotive, gaming, and computing products.

HDMI Technology has become the global standard for transmitting high-definition video, immersive audio, and advanced entertainment features through a single cable connection. Billions of products around the world — including HDTVs, gaming consoles, PCs, laptops, soundbars, AV receivers, cameras, and streaming devices — use HDMI connectivity. HDMI LA helps manage and support this extensive ecosystem through licensing, education, promotion, and compliance programs.

Licensing and Adopter Support

One of HDMI LA’s key responsibilities is providing licensing and adopter support services. Companies that want to manufacture HDMI-enabled products must become HDMI Adopters and comply with HDMI Specifications, trademark guidelines, and compliance testing requirements.

HDMI LA helps guide adopters through this process and provides resources that support proper implementation of HDMI Technology into products. The organization also works with international customs officials to help identify and prevent the export and import of unlicensed counterfeit HDMI products that violate HDMI trademarks and licensing requirements with noncompliant, inferior and dangerous products.

Compliance Testing and Certification

Compliance testing is another important part of the HDMI ecosystem. HDMI LA works with more than 20 international HDMI Authorized Test Centers (ATCs) that help ensure HDMI-enabled products meet compliance and certification requirements.

These authorized testing facilities evaluate products to verify they properly implement HDMI Specifications and deliver interoperability and reliable performance across the ecosystem.

Marketing and Industry Promotion

In addition to licensing activities, HDMI LA is heavily involved in marketing and promotional efforts designed to increase awareness and understanding of HDMI Technology.

The organization works with manufacturers, retailers, distributors, installers, and media outlets to communicate the benefits of HDMI connectivity and the latest technology advancements. These efforts help educate both the industry and consumers about features supporting ultra-high definition resolutions, faster refresh rates, dynamic HDR, high bitrate color, advanced gaming technologies, immersive audio, and HDMI cable capabilities.

Education and Training

Education is another important focus of HDMI LA. The organization provides information and training related to HDMI Technology for adopters, retailers, and consumers.

Retail sales associates and installers often benefit from educational materials that explain HDMI features, cable types, and best practices for system setup. Consumers also benefit from clearer information that helps them select the appropriate HDMI-enabled products and certified cables for their entertainment and gaming systems.

Supporting the Entertainment Industry

HDMI LA also works with content creators and distribution channels across the entertainment industry.

The organization collaborates with studios, broadcasters, streaming providers, and other technology companies to help support compatibility and enable the best experience possible throughout the HDMI ecosystem. This cooperation helps ensure that content can be delivered reliably from source devices to displays and audio systems while supporting the best possible viewing and listening experiences.

HDMI Cable Certification Program

HDMI LA also manages the HDMI Cable Certification Program, which helps ensure that certified HDMI Cables meet required performance and compliance standards.

The program helps consumers and installers identify certified cables designed to support reliable operation for today’s advanced HDMI-enabled products and features.
