In contemporary film culture, the rise of feminist cinema has become an undeniable phenomenon. Since film theorist Laura Mulvey introduced the concept of the “Male Gaze” in 1975, both academia and the media have increasingly focused on the unequal representation of gender in movies. Mulvey argued that traditional Hollywood films often objectify female characters, turning them into visual objects for male viewers, while men serve as the protagonists and active agents of the narrative. This perspective not only affects women’s self-perception but also shapes societal expectations of male roles. However, with the emergence of feminist cinema, this singular perspective has been challenged, indirectly revealing the emotional struggles and social pressures faced by men in modern society.

In recent years, many female-led films have attempted to break free from the framework of the male gaze, portraying female characters as autonomous, multidimensional, and emotionally complex. For instance, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) is centered on female characters, yet the depiction of Ken has sparked widespread discussion. The film portrays men as vulnerable and insecure within a patriarchal system, reminding audiences that men also endure emotional and social pressures. This depiction challenges traditional gender norms while prompting male viewers to reflect on their own emotional expression.

Similarly, the film Fair Play directly explores male psychological pressure in female-dominated environments. The male protagonist experiences increasing anxiety and insecurity when confronted with his partner’s career advancement, reflecting the contradictory roles men face in contemporary society. Traditional patriarchal expectations demand that men be strong, rational, and in control, but when women gain advantages in the workplace or society, men often experience challenges to their identity and value. This invisible pressure stems from social expectations as well as the magnified gender comparisons presented in cultural products, constraining men’s emotional expression.

From the perspective of audience culture, the rise of feminist cinema encourages male viewers to reexamine their identities. Studies indicate that male audiences may experience cognitive discomfort or emotional tension when watching female-led narratives, especially in scenes involving intimate relationships, power dynamics, or social status. At the same time, these challenges offer opportunities to foster gender understanding and emotional empathy. Confronting interactions between characters compels viewers to reflect on the balance of male and female roles in society, ultimately encouraging critical thinking about gender stereotypes.

The success of feminist cinema lies not only in showcasing female empowerment but also in facilitating comprehensive gender dialogue. Male characters should not be reduced to symbols of power but portrayed with multidimensional emotional depth, thereby truly promoting gender understanding. From an industry perspective, this approach also helps attract a broader audience, especially in a social climate increasingly attentive to gender issues.

The rise of feminist cinema and discussions around the male gaze have not only advanced conversations about gender equality but also exposed the pressures men face between traditional gender roles and modern societal expectations. These pressures represent both emotional challenges and societal identity dilemmas. Through the medium of film, audiences can witness not only female empowerment but also male vulnerability and adjustment. Moving forward, filmmakers should focus on gender diversity, balanced emotional representation, and nuanced interaction to create works that challenge traditional gender norms while promoting understanding and empathy between genders.
