Q&A Interview
What inspired you to create A Friend of Dorothy?
In the later stages of lockdown, I was doing an age-blind production of Hamlet and missed a dear friend, Shirley Woodham, a widow who found renewed purpose through our friendship. This film is about finding friendship when least expected and being seen for who you truly are, despite age, gender, race, or sexuality. It's a message that feels urgent now, in an age where social interaction is dwindling.
"Seeing your words lifted to life by such sublime talent is a dream come true."
What was a pivotal moment during the filmmaking process for you?
Being on set with my crew and actors was euphoria. Seeing words come to life through such talent was a dream. The actors' interpretations brought out deeper understandings of the characters. That's when the magic happens; it is heaven.

Is there a moment in the film that feels uniquely you?
I can't forget the scene where we float past JJ into the garden to see the ball sitting in the wisteria tree. It makes me cry every single time. These subtle surprises are something I infuse in my writing, along with donuts and the occasional bit of swearing—especially with Miriam in the film.
"Someone next to you just might change your life if you open yourself up."
What do you hope audiences take away from your film?
I hope they leave with a renewed passion for the people around them. Someone next to you might change your life if you open up. It's about fostering curiosity and compassion for those we might judge without knowing.

How did the film's success influence your future projects?
Seeing the film's success confirms that my ideas are worthy. It encourages me to explore stories of the underdog, those who feel 'othered.' It's where my passion truly lies.
What’s a valuable lesson you learned during production?
The idea that keeps popping into your head—follow it. Persistence pays off, and if your story resonates, others will support you. I got Miriam and Stephen by simply sending the script. If it resonates, they'll say yes.
"If it resonates with them, they'll do it."
