Table of Contents

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) is now accepting applications for the 2025 edition of NewNarratives, a dynamic content program created to identify and amplify emerging global storytellers. Now in its fifth year, the initiative continues to fund bold, original work that pushes boundaries, challenges norms, and reflects the world around us in powerful, imaginative ways.

What is NewNarratives?

Backed by the Rhulen Family Foundation, in honor of the late independent film producer Anthony Rhulen, NewNarratives is designed to spotlight creators whose voices transcend borders and dismantle convention. Free from restrictions on genre or format, the program is open to episodic, feature-length, short, live-action, fiction, documentary, experimental, and animated works.

This year’s program will award a total of $25,000 USD, distributed across two funding categories:

Grant Categories

1. General Artist Grants – 4 recipients ($5,000 each):
Open to a wide range of formats and genres, this grant supports projects at any stage—whether you're developing a concept, in production, or strategizing for audience engagement.

2. Environmental Storytelling Grant – 1 recipient ($5,000):
Thanks to new funding partners The Hollywood Climate Summit and Athens Services, this category supports short films in post-production that center climate and environmental themes—across fiction, documentary, live-action, or animation.

Important Dates

Applications Open: July 8, 2025, at 10 AM PST
Submission Deadline: August 5, 2025, at 3 PM PST

Whether you’re crafting stories that challenge the status quo or exploring the urgent issues of our planet, NewNarratives is an opportunity to gain the support and visibility your project deserves.
