Discussing the origins of Trapped
The film speaks to the cycles of inequality throughout the US, starting in certain private schools. We wanted to explore how privilege affects growing up and the choices you make. As children of teachers, the balance between students, faculty, and administrators was always a dinner table conversation. The idea of a “senior prank” raises questions about who is actually affected by these actions.

On the surprises during filmmaking
In the middle of the film, there's a complicated choice the main character makes. Originally, the decision went one way, but it lacked energy. Through editing, we flipped the decision, which was a big task but paid off by enhancing the film's action.
The most challenging aspect of production
Figuring out how to get 10,000 rat traps in a gym was a huge challenge. We tested camera angles and depth of field to decide where real traps were needed and where we could use paper models. Everyone on set helped place these traps, which was a massive collaborative effort.
"Figuring out how to get 10,000 rat traps in a gym was a huge challenge."

What audiences should take from the film
We hope audiences reflect on how personal privileges might insulate them from hard choices and consider how our leaders' privileges influence their worldview.
Lessons from independent filmmaking
The greatest strength is the freedom to take a swing at an idea without someone looking over your shoulder. We embraced the challenge of the rat traps, proving that creativity can overcome budget limits.
"The ability to take a swing at an idea feels at the heart of independent filmmaking."
