What drew you to make this film?

We were drawn to make this film because there were no documentaries portraying the show of the La Quebrada cliff divers. Right now, Acapulco is going through difficult times due to crime and the recent hurricanes, and we felt it was important to shine a light on this tradition. We also wanted to pay homage to one of the most iconic cultural practices in Mexico, which has been alive for over 89 years.

What surprised you most during the filmmaking process?

When we arrived to film, Acapulco had been severely damaged by Hurricane Otis. As a result, there were no public shows happening, which allowed us to build a very intimate relationship with the divers. We were able to follow them closely in their daily lives, and this opened the door for collaboration—together, we built many of the sequences in the film.

"Despite injuries, violence, and economic hardship, it’s possible to build a sense of purpose and belonging through passion."

What was the hardest creative decision you made?

We made a conscious decision to avoid talking-head interviews and instead build the narrative entirely through voice-over. Our goal was to focus on the divers as a community, emphasizing the collective experience over the individual stories. We also chose to shoot the film in black and white to reflect the delicate balance between life and death present in each dive.

What do you hope audiences take away from your film?

We hope audiences come away with a sense of the power of community and the incredible things passion can drive us to do. The story of the divers is ultimately a story about dreams—how we can pursue them against all odds.

"At the heart of my work lies a deep yearning to capture the raw passions of the human soul."

What does it mean to you to have your film selected for HollyShorts?

It’s been a long-standing dream of ours to have a short film screened in Los Angeles at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre. HollyShorts is not only one of the most important short film festivals in Los Angeles, but also among the most prestigious in the United States. It offers an incredible platform to gain visibility for our film—especially among members of the Academy.
