In this article, we recap highlights from the recent NAB 2025 event, emphasizing the innovative ideas shared by creators and how these concepts align with CFA’s mission of supporting underrepresented filmmakers. This year's NAB underscored creative thinking and community-building opportunities, essential for aspiring filmmakers.

Engaging with Creative Ideas

During the event, attendees shared unique approaches to filmmaking. One concept was presented by Butcher Bird Studios, who showcased how goats (yes, goats!) can play a role in capturing audience attention through engaging campaigns.

Why Goats?

  • Cost-effective for prop management.
  • They can consume waste materials like excess paper.
  • A fun approach to live-streaming events, where comments were written and then fed to the goats, creating a memorable and interactive experience for viewers.

New Technologies and Tools

Another notable innovation presented was from Creamsource, who launched an app allowing filmmakers to control their lighting from their devices. The app’s introduction sparked enthusiasm, presenting filmmakers with more flexibility in their creative process.

Networking and Community Building

NAB is not solely about technology; it also serves as a key networking opportunity for industry professionals. CFA Founders Haeleigh Royall and Indeana Underhill even expressed how much they appreciated reuniting with familiar faces at the convention.

  • Take time to meet people across different event halls.
  • Engage in conversations that can yield future collaborations.
  • Embrace inclusivity by connecting with those from diverse backgrounds.

Learning from Each Other: ASL and Inclusivity

At the event, Haylee Grund, one of CFA team members, demonstrated American Sign Language (ASL), teaching attendees how to sign "NAB." Signing "NAB" serves as a reminder that accessibility enriches our creative community, and incorporating sign language in spaces like festivals and conventions supports inclusivity.

Emphasizing the Learning Experience

CFA’s philosophy aligns with the very essence of events like NAB—education and community-building. Attendees left with new insights about filmmaking, networking skills, and an understanding of how to navigate a rapidly evolving industry landscape.
