Like many others, I had absolutely no interest in seeing The Sheep Detectives based on the trailer. I thought it looked like a rather forgettable and childish family film that would rely on cheap humor instead of a compelling narrative. Although I am an AMC Stubs A-List member and I attempt to watch almost every film in a theater if possible, I am still quite selective of what I choose to watch. I want to feel like I invest my time in a film that gives something back to me, no matter how minuscule it may be. And all I really have to say is that the marketing team behind this film did it no favors in the slightest, because this is genuinely one of the biggest surprises of the past few years.
I've seen this film twice now, once in theaters and then at home with my mom on Amazon Prime Video. I find this to be a beautifully nostalgic yet refreshingly original take on the whodunnit genre, hearkening back to classic family films of the 1990s and early 2000s. Director Kyle Balda, primarily known for his work in the Despicable Me franchise, has found a remarkable balance of a variety of emotions; he brilliantly captures the innocent charm of the 1995 drama Babe with the narrative wit of Rian Johnson's Knives Out. There's a poignant feeling of pure reminiscence when individuals watch this film, even if they have the smallest connection to this form of entertainment. That feeling of reminiscence also coincides wonderfully with one of the primary emotional themes of the story: remembering hurts.
Yes, it absolutely does... which is why it's such an important aspect of life. Without going into specific plot details, the film communicates that despite physical loss, it is our memory that keeps those close to us alive in spirit. There's so much to reflect upon with regard to memories between loved ones, and forgetting will heal any negative emotions. This is something that both the human and sheep characters realize in the film, and it is such a great lesson for young kids to learn at a young age. However, they will undoubtedly appreciate it so much more once they grow older — which is another reason why I greatly respect this film. It does not pander to children; it respects them with meaningful ideas that are universally admired. This brings me to the aspect of simplicity.
While there are certainly aspects of The Sheep Detectives that are more complex, particularly the actual murder mystery, it's the core of this film that holds a very simple moral. It does not try to be the most thought-provoking film of all time or the most narratively intricate; the story is simple enough to the point where families can rewatch it consistently, but it has more than enough depth to make rewatchability just as impactful. The power of simple storytelling has been cherished for decades, and The Sheep Detectives serves as a reminder that some of the best films are fairly simple stories:
The Shawshank Redemption is a straightforward prison drama that takes place over the course of 19 years, with powerful themes of hope, freedom, and friendship.
Top Gun: Maverick is essentially a touching surrogate father-son story with exhilarating flight sequences and a perfect balance of nostalgia and freshness.
12 Angry Men is virtually entirely in one location, and marvelously elevates its basic premise of a juror case with incredible writing and cinematography techniques.
These are just a few examples that illustrate the truth that a truly great film can use simplicity to its utmost advantage. Audiences are generally drawn to simple storytelling like a magnet, and when it comes to family-friendly entertainment, films like The Sheep Detectives prove that when simplicity is balanced with deep existential questions, they will most likely become timeless. The beauty of a simple yet thought-provoking film is that it contains something that anyone resonate with, but that it also implements more than enough charm (granted, it depends on the genre) to appeal to children of all ages.
Ultimately, The Sheep Detectives is a brilliant reminder of why films can be emotionally rewarding, along with the fact that certain films have so much more meaning than meets the eye.
