This year at the GoPro NAB booth, GoPro is launching pre-orders alongside the NAB Show opening, for their new cinematic Missions 1 Series Cameras. This is a lineup of three cameras consisting of the Mission 1, Mission 1 Pro, and Mission 1 Pro ILS, which stands for interchangeable lens system. These models were showcased at their booth. Here is an overview of its features, the differences between each model, and what users can look forward to when integrating this new camera into their own projects, no matter their skill level.

Mission 1 Series Features

All three camera bodies share the same core feature technology; that includes the 50 megapixel sensor, which allows users to shoot at 8k open-gate and 4k open-gate. This sensor is versatile for its ability to bend down to 12 megapixels, giving beautiful results even in low-light. They are extremely capable from a processing and power standpoint. They can shoot up to 960 fps at 1080p. They are also highly battery efficient, being able to last over 5 hours at 1080p, and over 3 hours at 4k. They have numerous other pro-features as well.

Their standout product is the Mission 1 Pro ILS, the camera boasts a micro 4/3rds mount, which gives users more freedom and choice when looking at lens selection. Another added benefit? The sensor size is smaller than the micro 4/3rd’s lens, users will only be shooting from the best part of the lens. This means that even while using more affordable lenses, user’s results will still retain a high level of quality.

Usability for Beginners

The Mission 1 Series is a great cinematic camera addition because of its range of models that cater to all users, including those who may be at different levels. Even for someone starting out, looking for something simple that still has professional features, the Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro provide such a high quality lens that there is increased ease of use while still giving great results. Conversely, the Mission Pro ILS is more suitable for advanced users wanting more manual control over their tools.

How GoPro has Shifted to Cinematic Cameras

GoPro started out mainly with their entry level cameras, priced around $200 and usually bought mainly for gift-giving and by younger users looking for a more affordable way to get into the GoPro ecosystem. Then followed the 360 cameras and their flagship action Hero cameras.

These Hero13 cameras were most notable for their versatility; being able to have a camera that can be mounted on helmets or on your body and disappear into the background, allowing users feel free to do whatever extreme activity they desire. However, there became a demand for a camera that can be used on a professional film set, or content creators asking for something high-res for long-length vlogging. Balancing the need for a small compact size and high resolution, GoPro created the Mission 1 Series as its own new category for those very users.
