Towards the end of February, I had the chance to sit down with Sam Morgan to talk about his short film I Love You, Bro. The night before our interview, the film hit 200,000 views on YouTube.

That many views is certainly enough to be considered "viral", however, this success didn't come overnight. In fact, Morgan has been working towards his dream of filmmaking since elementary school.

Morgan became interested in film in the second grade when a friend of his showed him a self-made stop-motion animation. He was inspired to make his own.

"I would use all my Legos and toys all around my house as the characters and scenery." Morgan said. "Because I was a child, I got very impatient with that and started shooting little live-action videos. And me and my sister would act in them and I'd get our babysitters to act and our parents sometimes. Just whoever I could find."

In eighth grade, he started upgrading his equipment so that he could create higher quality films with the help of his school's theater department.

Morgan started posting to his channel, Picture's Up Productions, in 2020 as a high school student. While his first few videos are film reviews, he began to branch out into short films in early 2021.

"I've always wanted to be a filmmaker, and I gradually started to focus the channel around my pursuit of that."

He continued the pattern of posting short films followed by behind-the-scenes videos until he started college when he shifted towards making video essays. As a student of entertainment and media studies at the University of Georgia, Morgan became interested in exploring different aspects of the entertainment industry.

"I've been able to kind of not just learn how to make films, but I've kind of become a student of the industry."

Morgan feels that his studies at UGA have helped him become a greater video essayist.

On Dec. 20, 2025, Morgan released I Love You, Bro to his channel. Created for one of his production classes, the film follows a pair of best friends, Connor and Zeke, who struggle with their relationship after Connor expresses his feelings of platonic love towards Zeke.

"It comes out of experience that I've had with guys just generally being emotionally unavailable and being very weird and guarded about their feelings. And I feel like the way that a lot of guys tend to act really stands in the way of forming meaningful relationships."

As a fellow film student, I know how much time and effort goes into creating a student short. Crews usually consist of 4 to 10 members, often including actors. It is impressive to see how much life and meaning Morgan and his crew were able to pack into the nine minute runtime.

Morgan did some promotion before the film, including livestreaming his editing process and creating posts on Instagram, but he didn't expect the film to become so popular, especially not so quickly.

"I thought that it had what it would take to sort of grab people and do decently well, but I definitely underestimated it."

While he is happy that the film has gotten so many views, he is most proud of how the film has impacted its viewers. Many commenters have shared their personal feelings and stories relating to the film. It's always a great feeling knowing that your work meant something to someone.
